Our commitment to the environment...

paper
The majority of the paper we use is actually a 100% cotton rag meaning that it is
completely tree free. Other papers we may use are typically between 30-100%
PCW (post-consumer waste). Papers that just say 'recycled' are often non
post-consumer waste and are only made from the waste generated by the paper
manufacturing process. PCW papers are truly recycled from papers that are
thrown away. One of our paper sources even comes from a 137 year old
family-run
paper mill that uses a clean, renewable energy based hydroelectric generator to
power their paper production. Overall we try to choose the best papers available
that have the highest recycled content possible.

inks
After long and careful consideration regarding inks, we choose to use a
non-petroleum, synthetic based ink. We know the recent "green" trend has been to
use soy-based inks but for several reasons we have chosen not to and we hope our
explanation will make sense. First, the inks we use do not 'skin' (or dry out) like soy
inks do. As a result, there is little to no waste from the inks. With soy inks, you have
to scrape away a thick layer of dried ink off the top of the can prior to each use.
This creates a lot of extra non-biodegradable waste. Secondly, soy inks are very
misleading in that there is often very little soy oil used for companies to still claim
the 'soy' title. Many people are under the impression that soy inks must be
completely natural which is not the case. Lastly, it has been common practice
recently in places such as Brazil to
cut down virgin rain forest to grow Soy crops for
the booming soy industry. (As avid tofu eaters, this makes us very sad)
Unfortunately this practice is just as harmful environmentally. Until we are satisfied
with the quality of a truly natural ink, we will continue to use the ink that we feel
makes as little environmental impact as possible. We hope you understand and
support our decision.

clean up
We try to use as little chemicals as possible and the majority of clean up is done
with good old' fashioned Crisco. Yup, the stuff your grandma used to make pie
crusts. This cleans ink off the press nicely and doesn't fill our garbage can with icky
chemicals. And it has such a familiar smell too. Yum.
